In an exciting announcement, the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage of Iraq has revealed the discovery of the boundaries and various structures of the ancient city of Jalula, the city that witnessed the famous battle of the same name 1386 years ago.
The Director-General of the Directorate of Research and Archaeological Excavations, Professor Ali Obeid Shalgham, noted that the exploration process continued for several months under the supervision of researcher Ahmed Abdul Jabbar Khamas from the Antiquities and Heritage Inspection of Diyala.
The main goal of this initiative was to identify the boundaries of the ancient city of Jalula, located north of the Diyala province, which was the scene of the famous battle between Muslims and Sasanian Persians. It is worth noting that this ancient city should not be confused with modern Jalula, founded in 1958, which is on the opposite bank near the village of Bahiza.
The Director-General of Research and Excavations also announced that archaeological operations are ongoing and have contributed to the discovery and documentation of various archaeological sites representing ancient cities, places, and settlements that are part of the rich civilizational history of the Mesopotamia region.
The study associated with archaeological exploration has shown that the name Jalula preceded the famous battle between the Sasanian Persians and the Muslims of the Rashidun Caliphate.
Jalula was a well-known location with great significance and a strategic station on the route to Jorasán and the ancient military route. The Sasanians chose it as the most suitable place to settle and resist the advances of Islamic armies, especially after the fall of Dastagird (Daskara) near Shahban in the year 628 AD.
After defeating the Sasanian Persians in the battle, they resisted the siege of the city for seven months until it was finally taken by the caliphate troops.
This archaeological discovery not only sheds light on the rich history of the region but also provides a deeper insight into the events that marked ancient Jalula and its strategic importance in the historical landscape.
Ongoing research and exploration promise to reveal more buried secrets from the past, providing a tangible connection to the historical roots of this fascinating region.
