The joint Egyptian-French archaeological mission has made a significant discovery under the waters of the Nile in Aswan. The mission, composed of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt and Paul Valéry University Montpellier, and led by Dr. Chris Crassion, has found inscriptions and reliefs of important pharaohs, including Amenhotep III, Thutmose IV, Psamtik II, and Apries.

The discovery occurred during a pioneering project of archaeological and photographic exploration in the area, focused on the rock inscriptions located between the Aswan Dam and the High Dam.

Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, reported that the mission began its first season of work around the islands of Philae and Konosos. Thanks to the good state of conservation of the inscriptions, the team has managed to fully document the texts.

Dr. Hisham El-Leithy, head of the Egyptian Antiquities Conservation and Registration Sector of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, explained that the mission used advanced technology during its activities.

Among the techniques employed were diving, archaeological surveying, underwater photography and video, as well as photogrammetry and archaeological drawing.

These tools allowed the identification and documentation of rock inscriptions both submerged and partially submerged in the Nile, following the guidelines of the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities on the use of international scientific procedures in the treatment of archaeological finds.

For his part, Dr. Islam Selim, Director-General of the Submerged Antiquities Department of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, noted that the mission is currently working on creating three-dimensional models of the discovered inscriptions. These models will be studied and published scientifically, which will contribute to their preservation and protection.

Preliminary results of the archaeological study suggest the possibility of finding new inscriptions and historical data about ancient Egypt, especially about the Eighteenth Dynasty, including the reigns of Thutmose IV and Amenhotep III, as well as information from the Late Period, highlighting the reigns of Pharaohs Psamtik II and Apries.

The mission will continue its work in the hope of uncovering more secrets of the past that lie beneath the waters of the legendary Nile.
