Rupert Murdoch asegura en esta entrevista para Sky News Australia que sus periódicos The Sun, The Times y el Wall Street Journal serán pronto de pago. Ofreceran el primer párrafo de cada noticia, y después un formulario de suscripción para quien quiera seguir leyendo.

Ahí están en un juego de guerrillas con Google, de donde no terminan por retirar sus contenidos en cualquier caso.

«The people who simply just pick up everything and run with it – steal our stories, we say they steal our stories – they just take them,» he said. «That’s Google, that’s Microsoft, that’s Ask.com, a whole lot of people … they shouldn’t have had it free all the time, and I think we’ve been asleep.»

La cuestión es si resulta más rentable cobrar suscripciones o los ingresos procedentes de la publicidad online. Está claro que la publicidad disminuye en publicaciones cerradas y de pago, así como el número de visitas. Pero para diarios como el Wall Street Journal es posible que eso no importe. Aun así, yo creo que es un error.
